Fred: Brian found this picture online and sent it to me. It was during “Jeff Fest,” a fall fest held in Jefferson Parish every year back then.
Jefferson Parish is the area right next to Orleans parish, which is basically the city of New Orleans. Both parishes (counties) are part of what they call the “metro area.”
I remember the show seeming like a big deal at the time. Back then, my thinking was just to get the band noticed, no matter how that was accomplished.
I never wanted an audience to go away, saying, “Well, that was a nice show. They were pretty good.” I always wanted to leave the crowd galvanized, with them hopefully saying, “OH MY GOD!! What was that?! We need to do that again!!!”
I would pretty much do whatever it took to get that response, whether that would be climbing giant PA stacks, swinging from stages, or covering myself from head to toe in mud. Almost anything.
My dad, who was my opposite in every way — a very reserved guy — saw us play at one of our first Jazz Fest shows. I asked him what he thought and he said, “Boy, you’re a ham.“
Couldn’t really dispute that one.
